Broccoli Seed Oil in Skincare: Why This Botanical Feels Silky

Posted by Leonica Cosmetics on

Broccoli might be one of the more unexpected names on your skincare label. Look a little closer, though, and you will find a lovely detail: the ingredient in our Supple Skin Duo comes from the plant’s seeds. This golden oil has a place in the conversation about how a formula glides over skin and feels during application.

If you have wondered why broccoli seed oil turns up in face care, or why it is sometimes compared with silicone, let’s get to know it.

What is broccoli seed oil?

Broccoli seed oil is the oil obtained from the seeds of the broccoli plant. Its cosmetic ingredient name is Brassica Oleracea Italica Seed Oil. On our Supple Skin ingredient lists, you will see broccoli seed oil identified by its botanical name alongside the familiar name.

The words seed oil are worth noticing. They tell you which part of the plant and which type of ingredient you are looking at. Broccoli seed oil is different from broccoli juice, mashed florets or a broccoli sprout extract. Sharing a plant name does not make those materials interchangeable in a formula.

Why is broccoli seed oil used in skincare?

Its appeal is partly about touch. Broccoli seed oil is used as an emollient, an ingredient that helps skin feel soft and smooth. Cosmetic ingredient supplier New Directions Aromatics describes its role in spreadability and the texture of creams and serums.

Think about the moment you smooth a product over your cheek. Does it glide easily? Does it feel silky or rich? An oil can contribute to those qualities, while the other ingredients and their proportions shape the overall experience. That makes texture a useful part of choosing skincare, especially when you want a routine you enjoy using.

Is broccoli seed oil a natural silicone?

You may come across that phrase when browsing ingredient descriptions. It is a comparison of feel: broccoli seed oil is often described as having a silky slip that brings silicone to mind. It is still a plant oil, not a silicone ingredient.

The comparison does not mean the two behave identically in every formula. It also does not tell you whether a finished product contains silicones; the full ingredient list answers that question. For shoppers, the useful takeaway is simple: broccoli seed oil is one of the botanical oils formulators can use when considering glide and finish.

What does research tell us about this oil?

A 2023 laboratory study published in Frontiers in Nutrition analysed five commercial seed oils, including broccoli. In the broccoli oil tested, unsaturated fatty acids predominated, with erucic acid the largest individual fatty acid measured. Linoleic and linolenic acids were also present.

This helps describe the oil’s composition. The study examined commercial oil samples and laboratory activity, rather than testing the Supple Skin Duo on people. It therefore does not establish results for our finished products. For everyday shopping, the clearest connection is the ingredient’s identity and its role as part of a complete cosmetic formula.

Where will you find broccoli seed oil at Leonica Cosmetics?

Broccoli seed oil appears in both the Supple Skin Face Serum and the Supple Skin Moisturizer. We recommend them together as the Supple Skin Duo, our complete two step face routine.

It shares those formulas with other botanical ingredients, including hibiscus flower extract and turmeric root extract. If you enjoy understanding the names on your label, our spotlights on hibiscus in skincare and turmeric in skincare introduce two more ingredients in the same routine. Each article looks at the particular ingredient form used in cosmetics.

How do you use the Supple Skin Duo?

You do not need a separate bottle of broccoli seed oil to include this ingredient in your routine. Follow Leonica’s directions for the complete Duo:

  1. After cleansing, leave your face wet.
  2. Apply two to three drops of the Supple Skin Face Serum.
  3. Follow with half a dime sized amount of the Supple Skin Moisturizer.
  4. Let your skin air dry.

Getting to know an ingredient can make a familiar routine more interesting. In this case, those tiny broccoli seeds lead us to an oil with a distinctive place in cosmetic texture, and to two products designed to be used together.

Ready to meet the complete routine? Explore the Supple Skin Duo and discover the full ingredient lists for both steps.
