Why Ingredient Lists Can Look Similar While Products Feel Completely Different

Posted by Leonica Cosmetics on

Have you ever compared two body care labels, recognised many of the same ingredients, and wondered why the products felt so different? One might spread with a light glide, while another feels richer from the first touch.

The ingredient list is a useful starting point. But familiar names do not tell you everything about the finished formula. The amounts used and the way ingredients are brought together also help shape the experience.

What an ingredient list actually tells you

In Canada, cosmetic ingredient lists generally place ingredients in descending order by weight. There are exceptions: ingredients present at 1% or less may appear in any order after those above 1%. Health Canada’s cosmetic labelling guide explains these rules.

That makes the list helpful for identifying what is in a product, but it does not give you the complete recipe. Two formulas can put an oil in the same position while using different amounts. You also cannot work out a precise percentage simply by counting how far down an ingredient appears.

The same names can belong to different textures

Think about ingredients in your kitchen. Seeing the same items on two recipes would not tell you whether their proportions or preparation matched. Body care has its own version of that difference.

A cream can contain tiny droplets of one liquid dispersed through another, a structure called an emulsion. The structure matters as well as the ingredients. Research into droplet size in emulsions describes how droplet size affects flow behaviour and examines how mixing conditions influence the droplets produced.

For a shopper, the useful takeaway is simple: a label does not show you the product’s internal structure or how it was made. Matching several ingredient names is not enough to predict an identical texture.

Where our ingredient choices come in

Here at Leonica Cosmetics, we only use unrefined oils in our formulations. That is a deliberate part of our approach to body care, and something we want you to know when choosing our products.

If you would like to understand that choice more fully, our article on raw plant oils and refined oils in body care explores the distinction.

Our Holistic Body Butter brings together water, aloe leaf juice and glycerine with plant butters and oils, including shea butter, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil. Reading those names gives you a picture of the ingredients we have chosen. Experiencing the finished product adds another piece: how the complete formula feels to you.

How to compare body care more thoughtfully

Alongside reading the full ingredient list, ask yourself:

  • What texture do I enjoy? Think about whether you prefer a lighter feel or a richer cream.
  • What does the product description tell me? Look for information about texture, scent and intended use, then follow the product’s directions.
  • What do I notice when I use it? Pay attention to how it spreads and the finish it leaves, rather than judging only by its thickness in the jar.

We love the enthusiasm customers share for our products at our pop-ups across the GTA. Those connections are a lovely reminder that body care is personal. A label helps you make an informed choice, and the experience of using a product helps you decide what you enjoy.
