When you picture body butter, you probably think of shea, cocoa butter and rich plant oils. Glycerin rarely gets the same attention. It is a clear liquid with a practical job, and it helps explain why a creamy moisturizer is more than a blend of butters.
Let’s get to know this familiar ingredient, including what its name tells you and why you do not need to buy it separately to have it in your routine.

What is glycerin, and is it the same as glycerine?
Glycerin, glycerine and glycerol refer to the same chemical substance. You may encounter different spellings on product pages and in research. It is a colourless, viscous liquid that mixes with water.
In cosmetics, glycerin works as a humectant, an ingredient that attracts and helps retain water. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review assessment lists humectant and skin conditioning functions among its uses. This is a specific formulation role, even though the ingredient has no dramatic colour or botanical scent.
Is glycerin an oil?
No. Its syrupy appearance can make that an easy assumption, but glycerin behaves differently from a plant oil. It mixes readily with water and is almost insoluble in fatty oils, as described in the same assessment.
That distinction is useful when reading a body butter label. Glycerin belongs to the water attracting side of the formula. Plant oils and butters contribute a different kind of richness and feel. Including both gives a formulator more than one way to shape the product.
Our guide to formulation staples introduces these supporting roles. Here, glycerin gets a closer look of its own.
What does research show about glycerin in skincare?
A study published in the February 2024 International Journal of Cosmetic Science tested humectant preparations on the forearms of 30 healthy women. Adding glycerol improved the hydration performance of the tested 1,3-propanediol preparation. Measurements were taken over eight hours.
This was human research, but it examined particular ingredient combinations over a short period. It was not a test of Leonica Cosmetics, and it does not establish an eight hour result for our products.
A separate 2022 laboratory study of glycerin solutions examined how concentration affected water retention and evaporation. That helps explain glycerin’s interaction with water; it is not a recipe for choosing a skincare percentage. The surrounding formula and the way it will be used still matter.
Does glycerin make a moisturizer sticky?
Finding glycerin on a label does not tell you how the finished product will feel. Think about the difference between handling a concentrated ingredient and using a finished cream: they are different experiences.
Judge the product by how it spreads and settles when you use the recommended amount. You cannot diagnose the cause of a tacky finish from one ingredient name alone. Our article on why similar ingredient lists can feel different explains why that distinction matters.
Should you add pure glycerin to your moisturizer?
We recommend using the finished formula as directed. Adding extra glycerin changes the balance the formulator selected, and a concentration used in a research study is not a home mixing instruction.
You also do not need a separate bottle simply because glycerin interests you. Check the products you already own. It may already be doing its job in your cream, lotion or cleanser.
Where you will find glycerin at Leonica Cosmetics
Our Holistic Body Butter lists glycerine alongside distilled water, aloe leaf juice, shea butter, cocoa butter and plant oils. Those ingredients contribute different parts of the complete creamy formula.
We love the enthusiasm customers share for our products at pop ups across the GTA. Getting to know a familiar ingredient adds another layer to that connection: you can enjoy the product and understand a little more about what is inside it.
Glycerin does not need a showy story to deserve its place on the label. Its water attracting role is a useful part of a thoughtfully balanced moisturizer.
