There is a little surprise behind some creamy body butters: one of their ingredients starts out quite firm. Kokum butter is a good example. Before it becomes part of a finished formula, this plant fat has a solid texture of its own.
If you have spotted kokum beside shea on a label and wondered why both are there, this spotlight is for you. Getting to know kokum gives you a closer look at the texture you scoop from the jar.

What is kokum butter?
Kokum butter is the fat obtained from the seed kernels of Garcinia indica. On a cosmetic label, you may see Garcinia Indica Seed Butter or simply kokum butter. It is a plant butter, rather than a dairy ingredient.
The seed matters here. Research about the fruit rind or an isolated compound from the plant does not automatically describe the butter. For a useful ingredient comparison, start by checking which part of the plant and which preparation the source is discussing.
Why is kokum butter firm?
Its fatty composition helps explain that solid texture. A 2019 study in Industrial Crops and Products found that stearic and oleic acids dominated the fatty acid profile of the kokum fat samples tested. The researchers also investigated how kokum fat, combined with other structuring ingredients, could turn liquid oils into gels.
That work was about material properties and potential food applications, not a skin trial. It gives us a useful view of kokum’s ability to contribute structure, without predicting results from an LC body butter.
In a cosmetic formula, a solid butter can contribute body alongside its softening role. It does not follow that the finished cream will feel hard. Water, oils, emulsifiers and the other ingredients all influence what ends up in your jar.
Is kokum butter the same as shea butter?
No. They come from different plants and are separate ingredients, even when they appear together in a product. Think of them as two choices available to a formulator, each contributing to the overall blend.
At Leonica Cosmetics, The Gentleman’s Body Butter includes both shea and kokum. It also contains distilled water, aloe leaf juice, glycerine, emulsifying wax, plant oils, a preservative blend, tocopherol and an essential oil blend. That complete combination is what you use on your skin.
Rather than looking for a winner between two butters, consider the texture and intended use of the finished product. Our article on why similar ingredient lists can feel different explains why the label is only part of the experience.
Can a kokum body butter be used on hair or a beard?
Follow the directions for the particular product. The Gentleman’s Body Butter is made for the body, beard and hair. Its directions recommend warming a small amount between your palms before working it through your beard or hair, then adding more only if needed.
That makes the amount easy to adjust. Start small, notice how the complete formula feels, and let that guide you. The presence of kokum alone is not a reason to use every body cream on your hair.

Do you need to use pure kokum butter separately?
You do not need a separate ingredient to enjoy a formula that already includes it. Pure kokum and a finished creamy body butter offer different textures. For everyday use, we recommend following the instructions for the finished product.
For The Gentleman’s Body Butter, massage a small amount into clean, slightly damp skin. The product’s warm scent comes from its essential oil blend, with notes of sweet orange, marjoram, cardamom, cinnamon and cedar.
Kokum also has a different job from glycerine, another ingredient in this formula. Our Glycerin Ingredient Spotlight explains the water attracting ingredient that works alongside plant butters in a cream.

We enjoy making the ingredient list feel a little more familiar. Kokum is worth knowing for its place in the texture and composition of body care, without asking it to explain everything about a product.
